XO Communications Boosts Core Network Capacity

XO Communications (News - Alert) has announced it would increase the capacity of its core network by 200% to meet the increasing demand of enterprises, service providers and telecommunications companies for more network bandwidth.

According to a company statement, XO will deploy an additional 800 Gigbits (Gbps) of capacity on major coast-to- coast routes across its nationwide 18,000 route-mile optical network, expanding from the 400 Gbps it is delivering from its network currently.

In recent times, there has been a drastic rise in the customer-driven demand for more bandwidth to meet the requirements of applications and services like online video streaming, rich multi- media content, HD video, VoIP, and higher-speed broadband offerings.  The new expansion is part of XO’s aggressive multi- million dollar network investment and marketing initiatives started last year to gain an edge as the demand for its inter-city network transport services is increasing. The move is expected to position XO as the new, more agile provider of network services for large enterprise and service provider customers.

For the expansion, two new fiber strands will be used on XO’s nationwide fiber network, adding the capacity in core XO network nodes to deliver an additional 80 10-Gbps channels on major coast-to-coast XO network routes. Infinera (News - Alert) Corp. will implement the new capacity upgrade with its DTN system, used by XO last year for the initial expansion of its network.

Additionally, XO Communications has announced that its 3 Guarantee Program will be extended. The program was introduced earlier this year to provide carriers, cable companies, content providers, large enterprises and wireless companies more incentives to use its suite of inter-city and metro network transport solutions, including Ethernet, IP Transit, and Wavelength services.

With the flexibility, scalability and advanced optical technology used in the XO network, services will be faster and customers will be offered a broad range of higher-speed network transport services. The company’s initiatives have helped it achieve:

--A 514% increase in sales orders for high-capacity inter-city network transport services from Q1 2006 to Q1 2007
--New contracts with major domestic and international telecommunications        carriers, online gaming, content and Internet-centric companies including China Netcom (News - Alert) USA, GameRail, NTT America and PCCW Global
--Industry recognition for its advanced optical network, including the 2007 NXTcomm (News - Alert) Eos award for Best Backbone/Core Network and two U.S. Wholesale Excellence Awards from ATLANTIC-ACM.
