Mi5 Networks' Gateway Blocks Web Infections

Mi5 Networks, a web security gateway company, has introduced Webgate, an all-in-one protection package that detects the threat environment, heals data in real time and eliminates downtime.

Explosive growth of web resources gave crooks opportunities to find ways and means to resort to data thefts and attacks. For example, they can introduce malicious software that sneaks into a network and installs bots to extract confidential data. They can initiate a web-borne attack code that can bypass traditional security mechanisms. These are just few examples to cite. The exhaustive list of threats includes malicious URLs, spyware, viruses, crimeware and so on.

In all such situations, Webate intercepts and filters web data streams in both directions on all ports and for all protocols, Mi5 Networks said in a statement to press.

With Webgate in place, organizations can centrally define and enforce acceptable use and web security policies at the Internet Gateway (News - Alert). This in turn will prevent users from uploading and downloading nearly 300 different file formats in over a dozen categories.

Webgate combines Mi5 developed network behavior heuristics with signature-based malware detection data from leading providers including IBM (News - Alert), Sophos, and Sunbelt.

Within a network when a PC faces a big threat, Webgate identifies it and alerts with a severity indicator. Simultaneously it dispatches a cleanup agent SpyWash to the infected hosts. Webgate’s ActiveX program will perform all these tasks without human intervention, according to company statement.

An independent survey of Gartner (News - Alert) points out those Internet applications would be the primary sources of malware infections in the enterprise in 2008 and beyond. The demand for network gateways would go up, as many organizations cannot effectively deal with infections, according to the survey.

"Web traffic is the new backdoor that enables malicious software to sneak undetected into an organization's network and silently install Bots, which are rapidly becoming the leading threat to corporate security," said Doug Camplejohn, founder and CEO of Mi5 Networks. "With Webgate we've developed a high performance platform that provides from a central point in the network full web security gateway functions plus unique botnet protection at the price of single function URL filtering products."
