Invitrogen Selects Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise

Novell (News - Alert) announced that Invitrogen has selected SUSE Linux Enterprise which will be the core operating platform for standardization and virtualization of the company’s servers.

Invitrogen provides essential life science technologies required for research, production and diagnostics and conducts business in over 70 countries supplying 35,000 products and services.

The SUSE Linux Enterprise from Novell offers flexibility to the company by which it can reduce server licensing costs, besides virtualizing with support on the VMware platform and simplifying migration from Windows and UNIX servers to Linux.

“We evaluated several Linux distributions and chose SUSE Linux Enterprise because it was the most cost-effective and flexible operating system,” said John Merritt, system architect at Invitrogen. “In addition, we look forward to leveraging the Virtual Machine Interface (VMI)-enabled kernel, which will give us better performance when running on the VMware virtualization platform.”

SUSE Linux Enterprise is expected to enable Invitrogen to manage its complex IT environment which includes different platforms and applications like HP servers, Oracle (News - Alert) databases and Web servers.

The company also uses PeopleSoft ERP applications consisting of e-commerce, human resources, payroll and customer relationship management. SUSE Linux Enterprise offers the company flexibility in running its applications on any platform and also uses hardware by virtualization which saves cost.

PlateSpin, which is a Novell company, helps enterprises like Invitrogen manage and extend the server virtualization usage in the data center. This is used for physical-to-physical migration and Linux physical-to-virtual server migration. The PlateSpin data center management software and SUSE Linux Enterprise together help companies increase their IT investments making use of Novell’s virtualization capabilities.

“SUSE Linux Enterprise can add value to a dynamic organization, such as Invitrogen, looking to minimize cost and complexity,” said Roger Levy, senior vice president and general manager of Open Platform Solutions at Novell.

Levy added that Novell’s technology direction, market leadership, continued investment in Linux, and focus on virtualization make it the industry’s most compelling Linux vendor. The mature and stable Linux distribution, complete with training and implementation services, enable the company’s customers to get the most out of their IT investments.

The SUSE Linux Enterprise is a platform for open enterprise and is best-engineered and an interoperable platform suitable for mission-critical computing from desktop to the data center. Novell offers infrastructure software and integrates mixed IT environments enabling people and technology to work together.
