AirSage Developer Zone Allows Access to Real-Time Traffic
By Arvind Arora TMCnet Contributing Editor
AirSage, a company providing traffic information, has announced to provide the developer community an opportunity to gain open access to the company’s real-time traffic information with the launch of AirSage Developer Zone. Through this initiative, AirSage will provide direct access to its unique speed and flow traffic information to the developers, enabling them to create their own unique traffic applications.
The AirSage Web site (www.airsage.com) can be accessed by the developers to gain free access to traffic information about one of the major U.S. markets. Additional markets may be made available on request. AirSage has now upgraded to provide speed and travel time information for urban and rural interstates, freeways and arterials also, whereas traffic data in the past only covered major urban interstates.
Headquartered in Atlanta, AirSage has been sharing its data with developers for some time in quite an informal manner. But now, things have gotten more specific the developers will be able to access an actual data feed as well as a map overlay. They can then use the data to create their own navigation, Web, logistics, intelligent transportation system (ITS) and other traffic applications.
The Director of AirSage’s Product Group, Michelangelo Ho, said that AirSage is the only traffic data company which has begun sharing its data in an innovative manner, and he hopes it turns out to be an important service for the company’s present and potential customers.
AirSage deploys its patented Wireless Signal Extraction (WISE) technology to derive the traffic data. This unique technology uses anonymous signals from motorists’ cell phones to provide real-time traffic information on hundreds of thousands of miles of roadways.
Over 1.2 billion location events are processed everyday by AirSage deploying its unparalleled access to signaling data. AirSage is able to determine the speed of the traffic and identify congested choke points that delay drivers utilizing this rich data stream.
Cy Smith, founder and CEO of AirSage, commented that the AirSage Developer Zone will allow the company to remove the obstacles and reach out to consumers, as well as product development interests, in hopes that this cooperative exchange will lead to the development of a creative, entrepreneurial community, opening exciting new markets for all parties involved.
AirSage provides reliable and accurate real-time traffic information to its partners and customers with the highest quality speed, travel time and traffic flow information on more than 100,000 miles of the nation’s highways, freeways, primary roadways and arterial roads. Currently, Air Sage is the only company in the U.S. with a wireless carrier partner committed to a national deployment.
