Study: Significant Market Opportunity for WiMAX in the U.S.

A new study from West Technology Research Solutions (WTRS) suggests that there is significant market opportunity for WiMAX technology. The study noted that, in the U.S., Sprint seems to be the leader in terms of bringing WiMAX (News - Alert) services to the market.

Meanwhile, 802.16-based WiMAX is finding a foothold in backhaul networks, and is being used as an alternative to landline phone service by small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

“The impetus for a WiMAX market development and expansion is the growth of services in end-user applications that utilize the expanded mobility and high bandwidth that WiMAX affords,” said WTRS principal analyst Kirsten West, in a statement to the press. “This is exactly what Sprint (News - Alert) is doing, the partnership with Google being one example.”

Earlier in July, Sprint and Google (News - Alert) announced a partnership to build an online portal with search, communications and social networking tools for customers of Sprint’s in-development WiMAX services.

For the report on WiMAX market potential, WTRS evaluated that and other emerging mobile technologies. These technologies were examined from a variety of perspectives, including market drivers and regulatory oversight.
