Google (News - Alert) Inc., the search engine giant, may be facing a big challenge from a German Online Search Engine as the European Union approved Germany to spend $165 million on Theseus, the research project on Internet search-engine technologies.
Google has always been positioned at the top due to its determination in adapting innovative technologies and launching services frequently. The arrival of a competitor is includes a demand for various research on technologies and sufficient finances.
The European market has always looked forward to a strong search engine which does not give repeated results as in the case of other leading search engines. But there has been an obstruction in taking off with an internet business in Europe due to diversity and considering the small gap between the existing giants, the Government of France and Germany have moved a step further in strengthening the Thesues project.
The Theseus research project, created by the top French and German technology groups is believed to dominate the world with its most advanced multimedia search engine for the next-generation Internet, a set of powerful tools for translating text and identifying and indexing images, audio as well as text.
This high-powered project will initially involve companies like Siemens AG, SAP AG, Deutsche Thomson (News - Alert) oHG and EMPOLIS GmbH, owned by Bertelsmann AG, to initiate the research and as the project rolls, the German funding would be spread out to small and medium businesses in order to further develop research. The project research is expected to continue to 2011.
"We welcome all efforts to help democratize access to information," Google spokeswoman Katie Watson said in a statement.
