Cidana and Siano develop hardware-software platform for Chinese Mobile TV

Cidana and Siano (News - Alert) have reportedly worked together to develop a new platform for Chinese mobile TV (CMMB) to offer ready to manufacture solutions to makers of portable PCs, Mobile Internet Devices and related equipment manufacturers.

The California-based Cidana provides middleware for mobile digital video with worldwide support for digital TV. Siano Mobile Silicon provides integrated silicon receiver and antenna chips for the mobile digital TV (MDTV) market.

CMMB (or S-TIMI- Satellite and Terrestrial Interactive Multi-service Infrastructure) is the technology developed in China and selected by the State Administration for Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) as the main platform for delivering TV services to mobile devices. The CMMB spec operates in the 2.6-GHz frequency range, using 25 MHz of bandwidth to offer 25 TV and 30 radio channels per each RF channel.

Cidana offers a broad Mobile DTV solution with complete support for worldwide standards and Siano offers its customers a detailed reference design for each Mobile TV application product to enable fast integration and ensure rapid time to market, according to the company. They have partnered to integrate Cidana’s software pack with a USB stick reference design from Siano for CMMB.

Siano says that their design packages are tailored with the typical interfaces and specific features to best meet the target application.

The USB stick used in the package for CMMB is powered by SMS1180 CMMB receiver chip, a second generation MDTV receiver that supports multi-band and multi-standards MDTV with enhanced features and application capabilities to meet the MDTV market standard developments.

Siano adds that SMS1180 is a highly integrated all-CMOS single chip receiver designed to enable low-cost, rapid implementation of combined terrestrial and satellite (multi-band) CMMB (S-TiMi) applications, meeting the challenging network topology of this technology. The SMS1180 integrated tuner and demodulator is complemented by a Host-API software package that includes drivers and libraries for popular host processors and operating systems.

Siano's CEO Alon Ironi said: “We’re very pleased to work with Cidana, who as the first company to originally introduce commercial grade software for CMMB, enjoy a strong presence in the Chinese market. Our on-going partnership with Cidana delivers the level of quality consumers today expect from CMMB devices.”
