RMI Powers Fujitsu's LTE Wireless Mobile Solution

Fujitsu has selected RMI’s Multi-core Multi-threaded XLR Processor for Fujitsu’s LTE (News - Alert) Base Station product that will reportedly be used by large telecommunications carriers to meet the growing needs of wireless connectivity.

Fujitsu’s LTE Base Station will use the XLR Processor (News - Alert), which incorporates an innovative set of XLR cores enabling multiple threads, or virtual CPUs (vCPUs), in a single chip, according to RMI’s sources.

Katsuhiko Tanahashi, general manager, Mobile Systems Unit at Fujitsu said that the XLR Processor’s capabilities and the performance levels give them the required performance for their LTE system. This performance coupled with the ease of programmability enables Fujitsu to deliver a very robust infrastructure system to their customers.

According to Sunny Siu, president, RMI Asia, working with Fujitsu has enabled them to fully demonstrate the features and the performance of the XLR Processor while matching what Fujitsu and its customers require for its LTE product. He stated that this agreement with Fujitsu underscores their focus and success in the telecom infrastructure market and they are happy to be working together on this important program.

Elaborating on the XLR architecture, RMI’s officials explain that the XLR architecture is built around 2-8 XLR processor-enhanced MIPS64 compatible cores, implementing fine-grained, 4-way multi-threading, combined with a multi-level hierarchy of caches, autonomous accelerators, and point-to-point interconnects for data and message transfers.

In addition to augmenting application scalability, the interconnects’ full-speed operation tightly integrates the high performance main memory controllers, level-2 caches, 10Gbps accelerated security operations, and accelerated networking interfaces. This enables the delivery of a processing solution running at frequencies of 800MHz to 1.2GHz optimized for maximum throughput and workload efficiency.

RMI Corporation is a fabless semiconductor company providing High-Performance Super System-on-a-Chip (SuperSoC) Processor solutions for the Infrastructure, Enterprise, and Consumer Media markets.

Last month, Procera Networks (News - Alert), a developer of Evolved Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) solutions providing the accurate traffic awareness, control and protection for complex networks, selected the RMI Multi-core Multi-threaded XLR Processor for its PacketLogic PL10000, a DPI appliance with up to 80Gbps of throughput.
