NTT America and Internet Systems Consortium Advance IPv6 for Open Source Community and General Public
By Anamika Singh TMCnet Contributing Editor
Internet Systems Consortium, (ISC) a non-profit public benefit corporation, and NTT America, a U.S. subsidiary of NTT Communications Corporation, announced that the ISC's IPv6 infrastructure has been enhanced by a donation of a GigE link from NTT America, an IP network services provider and operator of the Tier 1 IPv6 backbone. The IPv6 transit provided by NTT America to ISC is for supporting F-root name server operations. The country-code top level domains that are ISC DNS hosting clients and participants for Hosted@ISC include kernel.org, Mozilla, FreeBSD, Internet Archive and more.
"The FreeBSD Project greatly appreciates the opportunity to use ISC's high-performance IPv6 transit," says Robert Watson, president of the FreeBSD Foundation and Hosted@ISC participant. He continued, "As early adopters and implementers of IPv6 networking, this gives us the chance to exercise and improve IPv6 support in our operating system, as well as serve our current IPv6-ready users better."
"IPv6 is the building block of the new Internet, and it is the responsibility of the Internet infrastructure providers - the hardware, software and service providers - to ensure ample IPv6 access and transition capabilities are available to everyone," stated Kazuhiro Gomi, CTO and vice president of Global IP Network at NTT America.
"NTT America has been a long time supporter of ISC and we thank them for their donation," commented Paul Vixie, ISC President. "ISC is in a unique position to influence the evolution of the IPv4 to IPv6 Internet because of our blend of experience with the fundamental structures the Internet is built on. We write software implementing the protocols (such as DNS and DHCP); we operate infrastructure that uses them, such as a root nameserver for the global DNS; we participate in standards bodies like the IETF and policy organizations like ARIN to help keep the practicalities of software and operations aligned with standards and policies."
ISC provides IPv6-enabled Internet infrastructure and open source software like BIND 9 DNS software, which has supported IPv6, and ISC DHCP 4 has been supporting IPv6 since last year.
ISC is one of the first root nameserver operators working with IANA to provide IPv6 access that allows users to get service from F-root over both IPv6 and IPv4.
NTT America enhanced the inherent security features of IPv6 with its IntelliSecurity IPv6 Managed Firewall solution. NTT America also offers IPv6 transition solutions through its IPv6 Transition Consultancy. NTT Communications Group has been involved with the development and deployment of IPv6 technology since 1996.
