Open Source Wireless Sync for iPhone 2.0 Brought by Funambol

Funambol (News - Alert) Inc., a company providing Mobile 2.0 messaging software based on open source, has announced the enhancement of its native open source wireless sync app for iPhone 2.0. Deploying the new iPhone 2.0 SDK, the app allows users to wirelessly sync PIM data with a number of consumer and enterprise email systems and clients.

After the iPhone 2.0 begins shipping and the App Store opens in July, the free open source software will be made available to the iPhone users, who will be able to access the sync software via the free myFUNAMBOL portal. myFUNAMBOL enables free syncing of PIM data and mobile email for mass market users, unlike the MobileMe that was announced recently. The initial version of Funambol iPhone open source software, due to ship in July, will be able to sync contacts only, although a later version will also sync calendars and notes.

Fabrizio Capobianco (News - Alert), Funambol CEO, commented that iPhone 2.0's faster connectivity and new capabilities will appeal to many users, as being able to access their contacts, wherever they are stored, one of the few things the users look for. He noted that not all the users want to pay or plug-in to access their contacts and calendars, and they want them for free instead, via wireless sync, and that's one reason why Funambol’s original iPhone open source app was downloaded more than 100,000 times. He added that now the company’s software works with all new iPhones, hence the users, can wirelessly access their contacts now and other PIM data too very soon, all for free.

Prior to this, Funambol had brought the first native open source sync app for original iPhones in the world. Based upon the new iPhone 2.0 SDK, the new Funambol iPhone 2.0 sync app is an addition to the company's recent introduction of its new BlackBerry (News - Alert) open source software for push email and wireless PIM sync. During recent months in the past, the ad-funded open source push email solution for the mass market by Funambol has expanded its range of email and PIM sync softwares for the mobile devices and operating environments. The latest versions of these softwares provide support for Windows Mobile, Java ME, BlackBerry, iPhone and Android (News - Alert). The Funambol website will disclose more details on the new Funambol iPhone 2.0 wireless sync in the coming month of July.

Funambol is a company offering mobile 2.0 messaging software powered by open source, and its product list includes open source push email and PIM sync solutions for the mass market. Over two million copies of Funambol open source have been downloaded by 50,000 developers and project participants across 200 countries. Apart from this, an array of service providers, mobile operators, portals, device manufacturers and ISVs including customers, such as 1&1, Earthlink and CA (News - Alert), Inc., have utilized the commercial version of Funambol.
