Comcast Conducts Live 100G Network Trial with Nortel Optical Solution

Comcast (News - Alert) is reportedly testing a 100 Gigabit/sec optical solution from Nortel at the 71st meeting of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) conference which it is hosting in Philadelphia.

Based on the Nortel (News - Alert) 100G Adaptive Optical Engine, Nortel’s 100G solution can operate with comparable performance to today's networks. This capability enables operators to dramatically increase capacity.

This will be the first time when real traffic is run over a 100G wavelength on its existing network that is also carrying live 10G and 40G links. According to Nortel, the trial will run in parallel over the same optical infrastructure that supports a combination of high definition or HD video, Internet and voice traffic on Comcast's 40G national backbone network.

John Schanz, exectuve vice president of National Engineering and Technical Operations for Comcast, said in a statement that testing an interoperable multi-vendor 100G solution will help provide them with important information about how new solutions will support a next generation of high-bandwidth services for the digital generation of consumers.

As Comcast continue expanding their cross-platform video, voice and data services, the company needs these types of innovative technologies from vendors like Nortel to support the rapid growth of new applications and services that run over their network.

Philippe Morin, president, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel said that Comcast is testing the very future of networking with this 100G network trial. They are expecting several new innovations to be sparked by the capabilities made possible with this technology. Morin explained that their company has developed the most cost-effective 40G solution and is at the vanguard of delivering tomorrow's 100G networks.

Morin pointed out that this test is a first step in the broader adoption of 100G. The 100G solution is built on Nortel’s 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine, and requires no expensive network reengineering as it can use existing network elements, including in-ground fiber. It sets the stage for the coming era of hyperconnectivity, where every device that should connect to the network will connect to the network.

Comcast Corporation is a major provider of entertainment, information and communications products and services.

Nortel delivers communications capabilities that make the promise of Business Made Simple a reality for their customers. Nortel made news last week when Shiga University of Medical Science (SUMS) Hospital implemented an Ethernet solution from Nortel that provides high bandwidth communications throughout the site. By using the solution, healthcare workers at Shiga University of Medical Science (SUMS) Hospital enjoy faster, more reliable access to essential patient information.
