Network Synchronization and Time Solutions Provider Brilliant Telecom Gets $6.1 Million in Venture Capital

Next-generation network synchronization and time solutions provider Brilliant (News - Alert) Telecommunications Inc. has reportedly secured $6.1 million in venture capital, which it will use to expand its sales and marketing efforts, as well as for product development. The Series B round was led by ONSET Ventures, with Asset Management, Draper Associates, Draper Richards, and additional strategic investors also participating.

Brilliant Telecom develops and distributes an array of network timing, management and synchronization solutions, including carrier-class network time protocol (NTP) and precision time protocol (PTP) servers, Primary Reference Sources (PRS), and Building Integrated Timing Supplies (BITS). The company’s end-to-end timing network solutions deliver Service Level Agreement (SLA) monitoring and management capabilities, in addition to providing timing and synchronization to the most time-sensitive applications in legacy and next-generation IP networks

Network timing components are playing an increasingly critical role in service provider networks, particularly mobile networks, because network operators are increasingly rolling out bandwidth-intensive applications, such as VoIP, IPTV, mobile Internet and mobile television, which must be properly timed in order to avoid traffic bottlenecks and to maintain network performance. These applications require sufficient bandwidth to be delivered with good quality. Brilliant’s network components ensure that data packets associated with these types of services are properly prioritized and delivered in a timely manner. Its solutions are also used to ensure that customer services are provisioned in a timely fashion – critical for today’s mobile network operators as they are increasingly giving their customers full control to self-serve themselves to the applications and services they wish to use. With Brilliant's hardware platforms coupled with its SLA performance and monitoring software, operators have a complete edge-to-core solution which is readily deployed, easy to manage and affordable. Brilliant offers a full spectrum of highly accurate timing products which include network timing servers and clients, OEM modules, licensable intellectual property core technology and network management systems.

This new funding round brings total funding for the company, which was founded in 2004, to about $13.2 million.

Dr. Charles Barry (News - Alert), president and chief executive officer, Brilliant, said the financing round “provides the opportunity for Brilliant to augment our product development efforts as well as expand market penetration in the US and internationally.”

“The continued confidence shown by our investors ensures that we will continue to realize our vision of delivering timing solutions for today's TDM-based networks while offering a migration path to IP-rich technologies and lead the way for carrier-class IP backhaul networks," he said.

Brilliant’s technology is already deployed on the networks of several major mobile operators. Its timing solutions ensure seamless handoffs of calls and reduced dropped calls. It also enables femtocells to work seamlessly anywhere in the IP backhaul network.

Brilliant Telecom made news on TMCnet back in May 2007 when it announced that Tempest Telecom (News - Alert) Solutions would be partnering with Brilliant as part of its LLC partner program. Tempest provides customized equipment provisioning, product engineering, equipment repair and exchange, and asset recovery programs. Its clientele include telecommunication giants such as AT&T, British Telecom, COX Communications, and Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless. In addition, Tempest offers world-class wireless, landline, and networking infrastructure equipment.
