Helio Launches YouTube Mobile Application

Helio (News - Alert), a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) joint venture between South Korea’s SK Telecom (News - Alert) and Earthlink, has launched a YouTube Mobile application for all users of its Ocean Handset.

Ocean users can access the application at no additional charge. Running over a 3G network, the application allows users to capture video on the Ocean and upload it to YouTube (News - Alert), and allowing GPS-tagging of videos as well as the ability for users to rate and comment on videos posted to YouTube.

“Helio has taken the mobile YouTube experience to the next level,” said Chad Hurley, CEO and co-founder of YouTube. “This innovative application offers people even more customization and provides them with instant access to interact with the YouTube community whenever and wherever they go.”

Sky Dayton, CEO at Helio, noted that accessing YouTube while on the go has been limited to browsing and viewing, without the rating, sharing and personalization features that have made YouTube a runaway hit on the Web.

He added in a statement: “Helio is taking mobile YouTube beyond anything else on the market, letting members view tens of millions of videos but also giving them true community interaction comparable to the Web and even beyond the Web.”

The other device equipped with YouTube application is Apple’s iPhone (News - Alert). However, according to news reports, users only get the option to watch videos, bookmark videos, and share them with others. Unlike Helio’s YouTube application, iPhone users cannot comment on YouTube content or upload their own content directly from the application. In addition, the iPhone doesn't support 3G technology.
