By Mae Kowalke TMCnet Senior Editor
China’s largest cell phone carrier and Apple (News - Alert), Inc. reportedly are in talks about a potential iPhone deal that would expand availability of the popular smartphone to the Far East.
Associated Press reported Tuesday that China Mobile (News - Alert) CEO Wang Jianzhou confirmed existence of the negotiations, which apparently are being slowed down by disagreements over revenue-sharing aspects of the potential deal.
China Mobile is not the only Chinese carrier Apple is considering, AP said; the company is looking to launch iPhone (News - Alert) in China next year and is exploring options for the best carrier to partner with.
On news of talks between the two companies, the value of both China Mobile and Apple shares rose Tuesday. Just before 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, China Mobile (CHL) stocks were trading for roughly $86 on the New York Stock Exchange, up about 7 percent from previous close of $80.71.
Apple (AAPL) stocks were trading for about $168 on the Nasdaq, up roughly 9.4 percent from previous close of $153.76.
