David BurgessDavid Burgess, Kestrel Signal Processing, Inc.

I would like to speak about the OpenBTS project. The OpenBTS Project is an effort to construct an open-source Unix application that uses the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) to present a GSM air interface ("Um") to standard GSM handset and uses the Asterisk software PBX to connect calls. The combination of the ubiquitous GSM air interface with VoIP backhaul could form the basis of a new type of cellular network that could be deployed and operated at substantially lower cost than existing technologies in many applications. Michael GravesMichael Graves

Working from a home office for the past 12 years Michael has explored various aspects of VoIP for SOHO applications. An early adopter of embedded Asterisk, his initial effort deploying Asterisk in his home office resulted in the 2006 publication of "How To: Building an Embedded Asterisk PBX" at Tom's Hardware (Now www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/24210/82/), a publication the remains popular even today.

Since the September 2007 Michael has written extensively about his experience at his blog, "Graves On SOHO VoIP" (www.mgraves.org), and remains a regular contributor to www.smallnetbuilder.com, as well as various public VoIP forums.

His interest in HDVoice arises from recent events in a years-long search for the ideal cordless IP phone. Starting with the purchase of a Gigaset S685IP in March 2008, and later the opportunity to review the Polycom SoundPoint IP550 & IP650 desk phones in the summer of 2008, Michael has become convinced that telephony desperately needs to improve. And equally convinced that it can, if we just give it a push.
