Motorola unveils eco-friendly phone

Mobile communications company Motorola Inc (NYSE: MOT) today (6
January) unveiled two new mobile devices, the MOTO W233 Renew and the
MOTOSURF A3100.
The MOTO W233 Renew phone is reportedly the world's first mobile phone
made using plastics comprised of recycled water bottles. The plastic
housing of Renew is made from plastics comprised of recycled water
bottles and is 100% recyclable the company said.
The Renew phone is also claimed by the company to be the world's first
carbon neutral phone. Motorola, through an alliance with
Carbonfund.org, offsets the carbon dioxide required to manufacture,
distribute and operate the phone through investments in renewable
energy sources and reforestation. The phone has earned Carbonfund.org's
CarbonFree Product Certification after an extensive product life-cycle
assessment, Motorola said.
Renew offers nine hours of talk time, CrystalTalk technology and
messaging capabilities, The Renew phone is expected to be available at


T-Mobile USA in Q1 of 2009.
The MOTOSURF A3100 is a high-speed touch tablet with a fully
customisable home screen. According to John Cipolla, senior vice
president, product development, Motorola Mobile Devices, the MOTOSURF
A3100 has been developed as a true social smart phone with access to a
wide variety of applications.
MOTOSURF A3100 will be available in several regions from the first
quarter of 2009, including Asia and Latin America.
The company said that both phones will be presented this week at the
2009 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, US at the
Las Vegas Convention Centre (LVCC) Central Hall Booth #8545.
